Merseyside derby: Liverpool vs Everton
The Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton grew out of a split. Everton, founded in 1878, played at Anfield from 1884, a ground owned by club chairman John Houlding; after disagreements over how the club was run, Everton moved out in 1892 and Houlding created Liverpool Football Club to use Anfield. The first league derby was played on 13 October 1894 and finished Everton 3–0 Liverpool. For decades it was known as the friendly derby, because so many families in the city included supporters of both clubs, and it was one of the few derbies without total fan segregation. The two old grounds sat less than a mile apart across Stanley Park, until Everton moved to Hill Dickinson Stadium in Vauxhall.
