Soweto Derby: Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates
The Soweto Derby is the meeting of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, two Premiership clubs based in Soweto, Johannesburg. It was first contested on 24 January 1970. The rivalry comes from the way Chiefs were born: Kaizer Motaung, a former Orlando Pirates star, returned from playing for the Atlanta Chiefs in the North American Soccer League, found infighting in the Pirates hierarchy and formed a Kaizer XI that played friendlies before evolving into Kaizer Chiefs. Chiefs use FNB Stadium for home matches, while Pirates play at Orlando Stadium.
