2. Date, venue and rules of the 2026 Ballon d'Or

The nominees were announced on Tuesday 8 September 2026. The ceremony will take place on Monday 26 October 2026 at the London Palladium in London. For this 70th edition, France Football and UEFA are leaving Paris: it is the first time the award will be presented in London, as a tribute to Stanley Matthews, the first winner in 1956.

Votingeach voter ranks 10 players; points are awarded by position
Criterion 1individual performances, decisive and impressive character
Criterion 2team performances and trophies
Criterion 3class and fair play

The order of the criteria matters: individual performances come before trophies. That is the whole question in 2026, when the season's top scorer won neither the Champions League nor the World Cup.

How these figures are calculated

The main source is an exchange market: users buy and sell “this player wins the Ballon d'Or” contracts between themselves. For each player, we take the mid price between the best buy and sell offers. A price of 0.575 equals a raw probability of 57.5%, or decimal odds of 1 ÷ 0.575 = 1.74. Added together, these raw probabilities reach 108.5%: the extra 8.5 points play the role of a bookmaker's margin. So each value is divided by 1.085 to get back to 100%. The principle is explained in our guide to value betting and the bookmaker margin.

And with the bookmakers? On the same day, a comparison site covering 13 UK bookmakers showed Kane between 4/7 and 4/6 (1.57 to 1.67 in decimal odds), Yamal between 5/2 and 9/2 (3.50 to 5.50) and Mbappé between 6/1 and 8/1 (7.00 to 9.00): the same order and the same gaps. Beyond the top three, their prices varied widely from one operator to another (Rodri from 9/2 to 16/1, Kvaratskhelia from 7/1 to 33/1), and some lists still included players who are not among the 30 nominees — a sign of markets that are rarely updated. That is why we rely on the exchange market.

4. The five favourites under the microscope

1. Harry Kane (Bayern Munich, England) — 53.0%

Why he can win

Over the assessment period, Kane scored 73 goals in 65 games for Bayern and England. For his club: 61 goals in 51 games, including 36 in the Bundesliga (the league's top scorer for the third season running), 14 in the Champions League and 10 in the German Cup, with a hat-trick in the final against Stuttgart (3-0). Bayern won the league and cup double and the Super Cup. At the World Cup: 6 goals and third place for England.

What could stop him

He is missing the two major titles of the period: Bayern went out in the Champions League semi-finals, and England lost in the World Cup semi-finals before beating France 6-4 in the third-place match. On the second criterion (trophies), European and world champions are ahead of him.

2. Lamine Yamal (Barcelona, Spain) — 22.6%

Why he can win

He won the most prestigious title of the period: world champion with Spain, who beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time on 19 July 2026. With Barça, he retained the Spanish title (94 points), scored 16 LaLiga goals, finished as the league's top assist provider and was named LaLiga Player of the Season. At 19, he combines numbers, trophies and visibility.

What could stop him

His World Cup was quieter individually: a single goal. The tournament's Golden Ball went to his team-mate Rodri, and the Best Young Player award to Pau Cubarsí. And his raw numbers are a long way short of Kane's 73 goals.

3. Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid, France) — 8.8%

Why he can win

Individually, his season is the most complete: 25 LaLiga goals (Pichichi), 15 in the Champions League (the competition's top scorer) and 10 at the World Cup, where he won the Golden Boot — the first player to win it twice — and the Bronze Ball. He became the all-time top scorer in World Cup history, with 22 goals.

What could stop him

No team trophies: Real Madrid finished second in LaLiga behind Barça and went out in the Champions League quarter-finals, without a major trophy. France finished fourth at the World Cup.

4. Lionel Messi (Inter Miami, Argentina) — 6.0%

Why he can win

A World Cup finalist, he received the tournament's Silver Ball with 8 goals and 4 assists, including a hat-trick in the opening game against Algeria. For his club, he led Inter Miami to the MLS title in December 2025 (3-1 against Vancouver, two assists in the final, named MVP of the final), with a record 15 goals and assists in the play-offs.

What could stop him

The lost final against Spain, in which he neither scored nor assisted. And a club season played in MLS, away from the Champions League, where most of the period's biggest matches were played.

5. Rodri (Manchester City, Spain) — 3.2%

Why he can win

The 2024 winner was named best player of the 2026 World Cup (Golden Ball) and won the tournament with Spain, ahead of Messi and Mbappé in the tournament vote. He became the 11th player to have won the World Cup, the Champions League and the Ballon d'Or.

What could stop him

His club season was limited to 17 Premier League starts, on his return from a serious knee injury. His holding-midfield role produces few visible statistics: no goals at the World Cup.

5. Dembélé, PSG and the outsiders

Ousmane Dembélé, the 2025 Ballon d'Or winner and holder, won a second consecutive Champions League with PSG: 1-1 after extra time against Arsenal, then victory on penalties, on 30 May 2026 in Budapest. He equalised from the penalty spot in the final. PSG have 9 players among the 30 nominees. Yet the market gives Dembélé only around 0.5% and Kvaratskhelia, the best placed of the Parisians, 1.4%. One possible reading: with so many candidates from the same club, the journalists' votes may be spread thinly.

Among the other names to watch, Pau Cubarsí was named the World Cup's Best Young Player, and Michael Olise won the German double alongside Kane. Thirteen nominees were not listed on the exchange market on 19 September, including Hakimi, Saliba, Cubarsí and Ferran Torres, who scored the World Cup final winner.

7. Our prediction, criterion by criterion

There is no IASHARK model for the Ballon d'Or: our engine calculates match probabilities, not journalists' votes. What follows is therefore a reasoned reading of the official criteria, set against the market.

Our reading

Kane is the logical favourite if voters follow the order of the rules, which puts individual performances ahead of trophies. But 53% still means almost a one-in-two chance that another player wins. The most credible alternative scenario is Yamal, if the world title weighs more than 73 goals. Mbappé needs the jury to reward the numbers despite a season without a team trophy. This is an estimate, not a certainty.

8. What the odds do not tell you

If you are thinking of betting

No bet is an investment, and no odds guarantee a return. A Ballon d'Or bet ties up your stake until 26 October. Only bet with an operator licensed by the regulator in your country, set yourself a limit and never stake more than you can afford to lose. Under-18s are not permitted (18+). For the basics, read our beginner's guide to betting with a method and our advice on checking that an operator is licensed.

9. Frequently asked questions

When is the 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony?

The ceremony is scheduled for Monday 26 October 2026 at the London Palladium in London. It is the first time the Ballon d'Or has been presented in London, for the 70th edition of an award created in 1956.

Who is the favourite for the 2026 Ballon d'Or?

On 19 September 2026, the odds put Harry Kane first, with around a 53% chance once the margin is removed, ahead of Lamine Yamal (around 23%) and Kylian Mbappé (around 9%). Lionel Messi (6%) and Rodri (3%) follow. These are market estimates on a given date, not a certainty.

Which period counts for the 2026 Ballon d'Or?

Voters assess the period from 3 August 2025 to 19 July 2026. It covers the whole 2025-26 club season and the 2026 World Cup, whose final was played on 19 July.

How is the Ballon d'Or winner chosen?

The men's Ballon d'Or is voted for by 100 journalists, one per country from the top 100 nations in the FIFA ranking. Each voter ranks 10 players and points are awarded by position. Three criteria guide the vote: individual performances, then team performances and trophies, then class and fair play.

How many English players are nominated for the 2026 Ballon d'Or?

Three England internationals are among the 30 nominees: Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.

Are the percentages in this article a safe prediction?

No. They reflect the market odds on 19 September 2026 with the margin removed: an estimate, not a certainty. The winner will be decided by the votes of 100 journalists, and a 53% favourite has almost a one-in-two chance of not winning. IASHARK has no model of its own for the Ballon d'Or.
